Saughall Colts 2 Castrol Athletic 0
Played at Castrol Club Ellesmere port
This was the closing game of the season for the colts, a very long season at that and saw us finish on a high with a win in what was a very good game that was close at times but did see the Colts dominating for quite a good portion.
It was a very warm day and both the teams were slightly down on numbers but the Colts really seemed to gel and work well together in a game played for quite a while in Castrol’s half.
The first two quarters saw the game held at 0-0 but in the third we got a break with a really good goal just in under the cross bar.
Another in the final quarter sealed the game, all round it was a good friendly game with good support from both team’s parents and a pleasure to watch.
Well done to all.

Blacon 12 Saughall Colts 1
Match Review by Paul Nicholson.
The Colts were up against one of their strongest opponents on the hottest day of the year so far. An ideal day for summer sports and it always looked like we might lose by a cricket score.
I may have said it before but there was no disgrace in this Saughall performance. In fact the opening quarter was the football equivalent of "a maiden over" (in cricket that means there was no score). Unfortunately we were hit for six in the final period.
The Colts started the game in good spirits. We matched our supposedly superior opponents in every department. Joey played energetically up front and almost scored the first goal of the game but for a splendid save from the Blacon keeper. Owen worked busily in midfield. Jake was a colossus in defence and had a no nonsense approach to clearing the ball away. Ryan looked assured in goal and his long kicking gave us the opportunity to attack Blacon.
As the game progressed Blacon's extra quality on the ball started to tell. But Saughall continued to battle, particularly Zak. His enthusiasm for the game knows no bounds.
Saughall only started to suffer in the final quarter when - because of the extreme heat - it was a case of trying to find seven players willing to continue. Still, Joey came close with a burst forward and shot just past the post. A well deserved goal finally came when the Colts put a lot of pressure on the Blacon goal which resulted in a defender heading the ball past his own keeper.

Saughall Colts 2 Waverton Rockets 1
Played at Seahill
A good evenly fought game although scrappy at times, was enjoyed by the lads and came out with a positive result in a game that could have gone either way.
The first half of the game was pretty slow and lacking drive and could have gone either way at that point but then Saughall picked it up a bit and opened the goal scoring.
Then Waverton returned with an equaliser but Saughall managed to sneak one in to clinch the game.
An even game with some nice moves and dare I say set pieces! by both teams
Well done Saughall

Waverton Jets 5 Saughall Colts 5
Played at Christleton
This was a really good game to watch with Saughall opening well and pulling a 2-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. It saw two very evenly matched teams have a good end to end battle and ended with a fair result although at times the Colts were playing the better team but Waverton were getting in some very good passing work.
The last quarter saw Saughall 4-3 ahead but waverton fought back well to make the score 5-4 to them in the dying minutes, fortunately Saughall got a closing equaliser which was deserved.
A really good game to watch well done all

Saughall Colts 2 Westminster Park Panthers 7
Played at Sea Hill
This was a game that only came to life for Saughall in the last two quarters of the match, all the damage was caused by Westminster park in the first half of the game and the Colts really seemed to struggle to break into the game at all. The second half of the match was like a breath of fresh air as the Colts really picked up a pace keeping Westminster Parks score line to a minimum and getting two goals thanks to some excellent runs by Joe Black, unfortunately we left ourselves too much to do, if the first two quarters could have been played like the last two we would have been in with an excellent chance.

Vicars Cross Dynamos Colts 6 Saughall Colts 1
Match Review by Paul Nicholson.
Volcanic ash may have recently interrupted flight schedules across northern Europe, but it was normal service here. Saughall Colts crashed to a disappointing defeat.
Despite improving performances in recent weeks, the Blues failed to compete against a team they should have had a chance of beating.
Saughall made a promising start to the game. Kicking uphill we actually took the lead when Joey Powell battled his way into the area and stabbed the ball into the net. Saughall players kept to their positions, marked all the opposition red shirts and battled hard for the ball. They played together as a team. Unfortunately an equaliser for the home side came just before the first break.
Despite now kicking down the slope, the whole Saughall performance went downhill. Mistakes in defensive areas contributed to the vast majority of the next five goals.
Reece Rowlands kept on battling and fired in a couple of long range shots. But it was not Saughall's day.
So as the nation looked to the skies in midweek to see air traffic resume, Saughall's mums and dads are still looking up. Looking for some divine inspiration from somewhere! Please keep praying.

Blacon 5 Saughall Colts 5
This was an excellent game and had all the action you could ask for.
It started off slow for the Colts and saw them go 2-0 down very early on and looked like it was going to be a walk over by Blacon but the team fought back abd levelled the score early in the second quarter. From then on it was end to end and the game was either teams for the taking.
Both goal keepers worked really hard in this game and Ryan pulled off one of the best saves we have seen him do, just tipping it over the bar.
The score was level in the lasr five minutes of the game and was probably the best result as both teams had worked really hard, although we did have some really good shots on target and it would have been nice just to get one more the team played a game for themselves to be proud of.

Saughall Colts 2 Upton Panthers 7
There are only so many ways I can keep wording this but once again the score does not reflect the work the Colts put in to this match today.
The match began very well for Saughall with all the play being in Upton’s half and the Colts looking certain to get an early goal, the team certainly caught them off guard and were looking the stronger team initially.
After the first quarter things started to level up and Upton started to find their feet and a few set pieces and also a couple of goals but Saughall kept working hard and are really starting to work and pull together as a team on and off the field.
With a couple of goals in the last two quarters it showed that the team has more fight in them and will keep working to the end, well done all keep it going.

Westminster Park 5 Saughall Colts 1
Played at Westminster Park
Another match with a slightly unfair score line, the first two quarters were very even and Saughall fought well to keep the game level and only conceded one goal in each of the first two quarters. Westminster were playing well but the Colts were very comparable and working extremely well.
We had a few good chances on goal and were looking dangerous in the box on several occasions.
The third and fourth quarters saw a couple of silly mistakes but nothing to be ashamed of and the lads kept working hard throughout the match which was good to see. A deserved consolation goal in the final quarter brought a bit of justice to what could have been a lot closer score line.

Newton Eagle 6 Saughall Colts 0
In fairness the opening quarter started well, Saughall seemed to be in command of the game with some good drives forward and some good defending being done.
At the end of the first quarter we were only 1-0 down and were looking strong to continue, but then it all started to fall apart a little bit, Newton had some good set pieces with a player up front who could run rings around our defence and was finding his team mates well, but there were some excellent saves from Zac Brookman. In fairness Saughall battled on but started to get disheartened mid way through the 3rd quarter.
All in all it was a better result than we would have had this time last year, there is improvement and we still need to keep building on it.

Saughall Colts 4 Helsby Fc 0
Played at Sea Hill
Firstly could I just say that this is what I signed up for when I started to do the football, two village teams having an evenly fought game which was a pleasure to watch and be part of. No academies or lads being dropped because they are not good enough to be in a team, just two teams having a good go and working to ensure the lads enjoy themselves.
The game started with both teams playing well and looking keen and with both teams down on numbers it looked set to go either way for a while until Saughall opened with a goal. The game remained even and I was pleased to see some good positioning coming from Saughall and some good passes being made up the field as we had practiced in training. A couple more goals mid way through the game seemed to seal it for Saughall but Helsby did not let up they kept on working hard and tested both Saughalls defence and the Keeper throughout the game.
A goal in the last quarter by the Colts finished the game off nicely for them but it had been a good game throughout that was enjoyable to watch for all involved and all the lads seemed to get a lot from it.
Thanks to Helsby for a good and friendly game whist still keeping it competitive, let’s hope we can have more of the same as I think that sometimes it is what the League lacks.

Christleton New scene 12 Saughall Colts 0
Played at Sea Hill
The first quarter and a good portion of the second quarter saw the Colts hold them at 1-0 down; a very good effort for what is one of the strongest sides in the age group.
After that it all went a bit downhill and while we struggled to keep possession they were passing the ball around with ease and making it at times look very easy.
We had a couple of good chances on target but not enough to get any goals.
Plenty of work still to do but let’s keep our heads up.

Saughall Colts 0 Christleton New Scene 10
Match review by P. Nicholson
Ignore the scoreline. For three of the four quarters Saughall Colts put in a battling display against without doubt one of the best teams in Chester.
An overnight snowfall left Sea Hill with a white cover. An occasion that called for the old orange ball to be brought out. But we didn't have one. Undeterred, the game went ahead anyway. The New Scene teams have always been in a league of their own. And this year's U8s are no exception. They made passing a football and creating space look so easy. This is something for Saughall to aim for.
Saughall played the opening half of the game with great discipline. They did as they were told and kept their positions well. All the team battled hard for the ball. The half time score was 0-5 but every goal had been almost unstoppable. Ryan Furnival had played well as keeper. With Reece Rowlands now in goal, the Colts managed to keep the third quarter scoreless. There was some terrific defending from Owen Gittins, Zac Brookman kept chasing the ball and Libby Jones was commanding in midfield. In fact Libby had two chances on goal but was stopped once by the keeper and once by a professional foul.
All the good work of the first three quarters was undone in the final one. All the Colts' hard work seemed to stop. So New Scene were able to double their score.
We play the same team again next week. The Colts need to ensure they play together as a team for a full match and listen to what the coaches have to say.

Saughall Colts 1 Chester Nomads 8
Played at Boughton Cricket Ground
A good start to the first game back after the extended Christmas break saw the Colts 2-1 down at the end of the first quarter, after the that the world fell apart !.
The rest of the game saw the Nomads dominate and the Colts starting to get down and running out of life. From then on it was a fairly one sided game really and the Nomads showed some good passing work on a very wet pitch.
Some work to do but we can pull ourselves back lads if we put the work in!!!

The game opened very slowly for Saughall and often looked pretty weak although the opposition were also struggling. The first quarter saw a goal put away by Libby Jones but was followed not long after by a goal from Waverton, they also managed to put away a second goal before the whistle for the end of the first quarter.
Saughall came out the second quarter a much improved team and started to work as a team with some good passing and a lot of opportunities on goal, some great efforts by Owen Gittins but they were not to be. The second goal came from Joey Powell which boosted the team and from then on we saw three more goals by Libby Jones with some great setting up and running with the ball by the other team members helping her to finish.
The defence stayed strong with some strong cross balls from the Rockets and some good goal keeping by Zac Brookman and Ryan Furnival.
Well done team this is our first win

Westminster Park Panthers 5 Saughall Colts 1
Played at Westminster Park At the start of the game I was certain this was going to be a white wash as the Panthers were all over the Colts like a rash with some very good long play and some even longer throw in’s. The pitch was long and pretty wet and Saughall struggled to get the game under control.
The second quarter saw a lot more control and defensive work from the Colts and starting to work together again, the third saw Saughall dominate and control the game with some good chances and a lot of play in the Panthers half and Libby Jones scored a goal to help boost a bit of confidence.
The final quarter again saw the Colts holding their own and working well to keep the score to the result it was.
Overall a poor start but a good recovery to see them all working hard and playing well together.

What a brilliant start to the game by Saughall they came out fast and were driving forward really well and Libby Jones produced a goal in the second minute giving us a great start. It looked like we were going to have this one in the bag from early on with some great work by all the players and the score remaining the same by the end of the first quarter.
The second and third quarters saw the game slip in the favour of Vicars X and the lads needed some encouragement to take shots at goal but after a regroup and a chat the final quarter saw Saughall come out blazing and two more goals got put away by Jake Mason and Reece Rowlands. Ten more minutes and we may have got the scores level but the ref was having none of it!!
Overall a well played game with some excellent work, keep it up we will get that win soon!

Vicars Cross Dynamos 7 Saughall Colts 2
Match Report by Paul Nicholson
New territory for Saturday morning football. If the Welsh rugby players can have the roof closed on the Millennium Stadium then why can't Saughall Colts play under a roof too. They can. Somebody had the good sense to switch this fixture to the Christleton sports hall. So as the wind and rain continued to batter Britain, the Colts tried to weather the Dynamos' storm. Indoors.
The usual start from Saughall. 1-0 to the opposition. But today Saughall were up for the contest. Joe Black must have had more than two Weetabix for his breakfast. He was everywhere. Bringing the ball half way across the pitch he then hit an inviting cross into the penalty area. Owen Gittins stretched out a leg and poked the ball past the keeper.
Vicars Cross took the lead just before the first break. Back came Saughall. Reece Rowlands lashed an unstoppable shot into the net. 2-2.
In terms of goals scored that was as good as it got for the Colts. The remaining goals were all scored by the Dynamos. This was not a real reflection of how well Saughall continued to play. The Colts just needed to be more ruthless in front of goal and cut out the silly mistakes in defence.
After a run of defeats on the outdoor pitches around Chester it was hoped that playing indoors may have brought about a change in luck. Unfortunately not. Maybe next week the Colts can try their luck at playing Vicars Cross on the Nintendo Wii. I would fancy Saughall's chances in that one!

Saughall Colts 1 Upton Pumas 12
Another game. Another defeat. After a mauling from the Upton Panthers last week, the Colts suffered this week as prey for the Pumas.
Maybe it was the dreary Autumn weather, the heavy pitch, the referee, bad luck or simply the bad Feng Shui of the pitch layout. We are running out of excuses. Saughall were simply up against another excellent team, one that was said to include Academy players. Unfortunately the hope that it might be Fame Academy was quickly ended when we found ourselves 1-0 down soon after kick-off.
At times Saughall were a match for their opponents. When the contest broke down into a scrappy, close encounter the Colts were able to battle and be the equal of Upton. Some tenacious scrambles in the Saughall penalty area were generally well defended. In particular, Joe Black was tenacious in the tackle, Lewis Wilkinson used his strength with effect, and Zac Brookman made some terrific saves during his spell as goalkeeper. Unfortunately Saughall were outplayed when Upton opened up the game with some speedy counter-attacks, cross-field passing and bursts down the wing.
Special mention to Owen Gittins who managed to break some sort of record by bringing along four adult spectators to increase the vocal Saughall support.
Despite being on the receiving end, Saughall continued in their quest for a goal. In the final quarter, Libby Jones burst forward in pursuit of a long punt forward. Two defenders and the goalkeeper looked more likely to reach it first but the ball was poked past the goalkeeper from outside the penalty area. It was debatable whether the last touch had come off a defender or whether Libby had got their first. Libby claimed it and nobody was going to dispute the fact that she deserved the goal.

This was not a game that went Saughalls way although they played as well as they had the previous week the Panthers were a strong side that played like ten year olds, and at least three of their players looked as though they were.
The match got off to a poor start for the Colts on what was to be honest a very poor pitch, and they ended up 5-0 down at the end of the first quarter.
There was a lot better work in the second and third quarters with plenty of good work from the team and some good opportunities in Upton's area and the Colts only conceded one goal in each quarter.
The final quarter saw some tired deflated colts concede three goals. All in all a disappointing game for the lads after the efforts of the last two weeks against a rather “LARGE” Upton side

Saughall Colts 1 Westminster Park Lions 3
The first time we played this team we got walked all over and the subsequent games have seen improvements but still taking a big defeat. The game the colts played this Saturday was like the new team I had collected the week before and were all working brilliantly as a team to the point where it is getting difficult to decide who to leave off the pitch at the moment. The Colts opened the game with the first goal and had Westminster Park on the back foot initially with plenty of driving forward up the pitch and some excellent passing work. The away team soon regained composure and equalised and from then on it was really anyone’s game, a very close game which could have gone either way with some good opportunities for both teams.
Well done again to the Colts for a brilliant game to watch and some real team work and excellent conduct and sportsmanship being displayed by all the players on our squad.

This has got to be the turning point for the Colts, yes they lost the game but they all actually started to play really well as a team. The game showed Newton to be a good side with a strong defence but Saughall were also working well in all areas, the defence was holding together nicely and the midfield was supporting both the defence and the forward players whilst the forwards were making some excellent cross field passes.
All in all the game was a very exciting game with some good opportunities for the Colts and with a bit more luck could have easily seen two or three more goals.
It was a pleasure to watch today and see everyone working together and listening and playing as a team. Well done team keep it up

This game should have been a closer result although in fairness the Newton side were a better team. The Colts seemed to struggle with the game today and were not really defending or attacking very strongly. An early goal from Newton saw them off to a good start but it was quickly followed by a return goal from Joseph Black for the Colts. The game really then went downhill for the Colts although there were some good opportunities but we did not seem to quite make a good finish of them. We had some excellent goal keeping from all three goal keepers which saved the game from being a much larger defeat
Keep working lads we will pick up from this, at least we got our first goal of the season !!!!!

Saughall Colts 0 Malpas 11
A difficult game for the Colts. Some excellent long range shooting from the visitors early on had Saughall immediately on the back-foot. Mistakes by the team then presented Malpas with chances which they took. 4-0 down after the first quarter soon became 8-0 by half-time.
But to Saughall's credit they never gave up and the second half of the game was much closer. Players started to keep to their positions and clear their lines when defending.
The Malpas coaches praised Libby for her commitment and tough tackling. They also had a good word for 'the blond lad'. This could have been Reece, who burst forward on several occasions as the Colts threatened to score. Or it could have been Patrick who made some timely interceptions and clearances in defence.

A score that does not reflect the effort and work the lads put in to this the first game of the 2009 season. The lads all worked very well together in the new under 8’s team with new players starting their first match for us.
The match was very even throughout with the colts only trailing by one goal for the first three quarters. It was a pleasure to watch the lads working together and finding space in this game and they deserved one or two goals in a game that saw a lot of chances on goal for Saughall. Helsby played well and just got the better of Saughall in the last quarter with some little errors from the Colts but all in all a very promising start to the season for the lads. Let’s keep it up lads
