Saughall Colts 1 v Chester Nomads 2
Heartbreak for the Colts. After recent defeats and some tired performances of late they battled hard against a decent Chester Nomads team only to be concede a losing goal with just three minutes to go.
Saughall looked solid today. The tough tackling Jacks in the centre of defence - Kennedy and Williams - were determined to keep the opposition at bay. They were ably assisted by the intelligent central midfield play of Benjamin Nicholson.
No goals in the first half. Chester Nomads were threatening on the counter attack but Saughall were assured when in possession. The Colts looked to use the threat of Josh Gregory down the right and James Winskill on the left.
The stalemate was broken when the referee spotted a Nomads handball inside their own penalty area. James Winskill calmly slotted the ball home from the spot.
End to end football now. Unfortunately it was the Nomads who took the honours with two goals. But even after the late second goal by the visitors, Saughall had some good chances to equalise.
Mom: Not awarded - a good all round team performance

Both teams battled hard with plenty of good tackling and ball play. First half saw Saughall concede just before half time. Saughall equalised soon after the break.. A second goal from James Winskill put Saughall ahead. Newton equalised with minutes left on the clock. Well done to Ben Spenser for his first ever goal for the club and subsequent mom match award.

Newton Eagles 7 v Saughall Colts 1
Newton started bright with some great passing from back to front. Well done boys for a splendid game of football. You out played Saughall from start to finish. The two early goals gave Newton the belief they could beat Saughall who in truth never looked liked playing to their true potential. Newtons first win against Saughall must have been sweet especially in view of previous heavy league defeats this season from Saughall and a cup exit early in the season.
Well done to Jack Williams who never gave up and battled like a true captain and Joe Warrington for a good conciliation goal.

Saughall Colts 3 v Princess Villa 5
The pitch was in good condition considering the sprinkling of snow on the surface.
The colts gave a very good account and matched Villa in every position and in the opening 10 minutes took an early lead from Mathew Leek. Defensively strong and disciplined we gave them no easy shots or passageway through and when they did Owen and Jack were on hand to stop any attack. A lapse in concentration led to an equaliser. Calm defending from Owen and some impressive decisions he carried the ball out of defence to produce several attacks. Joe Warrington worked hard on the left and Marcus and Joe backed each other up with some hard work. Brad again magnificent in the nets. His shot-stopping was at his best. Saughall again took the lead Josh Gregory with a great finish. 2-1 and sprits were high. Despite all this Villa did manage to claw back a goal unfortunately for the colts as the goal was clearly offside. You could tell that we had the opposition rattled though as the staff and players started to bemoan the referee’s decisions.
At 2-2 this game could go either way. Josh looked lively with some link up play from Scotty and Matty Leek. Saughall were unlucky not to go infront again. A well taken goal from Villa. 2-3 the game was a great advert for junior soccer. At this point the heavens opened the game was stopped due to a heavy hail stone storm. We took cover. Both teams came out and battled but alas pushing up to create another goal Saughall conceded. Both teams never gave up. Josh put the ball in the back of the net for a well deserved second goal with 8 minutes on the clock.
A tough game played in good spirit.
Very proud of you lads, well done.

13 December 2009
Saughall Colts 2 Chester Nomad Colts 1
A brand new dawn at Seahill with the boys
competing for this top of the table clash. On a bright Sunday morning against
a strong opposition the Manager and coach asked for 100 percent and boy did we
get it. Just like the last fixture, Winskill burst through in the opening couple
of minutes to give Scott Cobden and chance open proceedings with a well taken
opening goal.
The link up between Josh and James has been one of the highlights of the season
so far conjuring up images of Toshack and Keegan in days gone by (the telepathic
card thing between them was a fix wasn`t it?!). It was Josh`s turn to strike on
17 minutes and what a strike! Taking it first time and not allowing the goalie
time to set himself he lashed it just wide.
Good work in the midfield led to Winskill again giving the ball to Scott Cobden
netting his second after a good through ball and sent us in at half time 2-1 up.
Two aims were stated at the interval, win the second half and keep a clean
sheet. Fortunately, both was achieved with a game of pinball in the area
resulted in us on the back foot for a while on came Jack Kennedy credit to Jack
for his patience and his strong tackles in the middle to the park gave us an
extra dimension. Well done to the lads for rolling up their sleeves and
coming back strongly with some good defensive work. Marcus Kennedy put some
good strong tackles in and filled in for Fergus. There`s still a bit of work to
do at times especially as the back four all want to go up but Redial is a plus
for all set pieces and his ability to put the ball in good areas. Unlucky Fergus
not to score with a great free kick effort.. Owen Harrop, Matty Sutch and Ben
Nicholson always managed to do enough to deny the opposition time and space on
the ball. Well done to our Keeper, who spent most of the first half doing not
much but pulled off two excellent successive saves in the second half.), Jack
Williams well done for breaking up the opposition`s attack and acting as a
springboard for our strikers. Again, Joe Warrington gave an impressive
performance with some delightful passes.
MOM goes to Matty Leek whose job to hold up the ball up front on his own.
Although there were some strong cases for it from other quarters, not least of
whom Cobden goes from strength to strength in the scoring charts!!
Well done boys keep up the good work. As long as Fergus is happy I’m happy!!
This result was just the tonic and a great way to end one match left before the Christmas break.

Saughall Colts 7 Vicars Cross 3
Saughall Colts entertained Vicars Cross on a cold and wet winter afternoon Saughall started off very well with an early goal from winger Scott Cobden. Saughall needed to be on form if they were to get anything today. James Winskill soon added to the tally with an individual goal. Fergus Redeal scored a great free kick his very first for the team! Well done big man. James Winskill and Jack Williams had to come off due to illness and on came Sam Evans and Jack Kennedy well done boys for some good work.
Owen Harrop showed how good he can be he deserved his mom today. He dominated midfield from the start and had a part in some of the goals. Special mention to Dan Jones who played very well between the sticks. His kicking was delightful to watch and sent us on our way on several occasions. Well done Matty Leek with a well deserved goal at the end.
Well played to all. Was it worth braving the cold and the rain?? Well, as the ball rolled in for the 7th goal, I couldn't think of anywhere else I would rather be.

Upton JFC 5 v Saughall Colts 2
At the start of the match Manager Winskill as questions of the team. She wanted a 100 percent performance from everyone. Goals at the start and end of the game ultimately proved to be the difference between the sides with Colts putting up some stern resistance and rather unluckily finishing the game as losers.
The early minutes of the first half set the scene for the rest of the first half with Colts pushing forwards and really taking the game to the opposition. Pressure after 20 minutes led to an Upton player scoring on the break to make it 1-0 in their favor. The pattern of the first half was very much one of the lads having the lion’s share of possession resulting in a number of missed opportunities caused by a combination of poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping and Upton threatening on the break. The half time interval saw Coach Cobden warning the players about their finishing and urging them to lift the ball over the keeper.
The second half was a minute old when Upton creased their lead. The next goal would prove to be the important one with Upton now very much hanging on. A great goal from Mom Josh Geogory gave the colts hope. Unfortunately, a lapse in concentration by the defenders led to a goal from Upton 4 – 1 then the lads dug in.
With eight minutes left surely the game couldn’t offer any more drama, nor could it?!! You bet it could!! to slot hone another goal up pops Matty Sutch. Upton again scored a lucky goal to make it 5 – 2 barely had time to take the resulting centre kick before the Ref blew for time, fantastic!!
We had given Upton a game!!!
In summary, a great advert for the junior game with both sides going all out for the win, barely a foul made or conceded by both teams and a Ref who was for his first game in chrgre did ok. MOM goes to James Winskill who thwarted attack after attack, especially in the second half and was a constant thorn in the right wingers side the goals corer Matty Suthc shared the mom wiith James. But in truth the Saughall team was mom for an impressive performance from a very strong outfit. If we play like this next week beware!!!???? Thank you boys for a excellent effort and performance you made us proud.

Saughall Colts 7 v Westminster Park 3
A much better game than last week, with plenty of passing, finished as a comfortable 7-3 victory for the Colts (and would have been more if it hadn't been for some super saves from the Westminster keeper).
The first half started with the Colts in the ascendancy. James, Josh and Matty Leek all had shots saved before Mathew Leeks first goal put us ahead. There soon followed a second goal thanks to Josh and still the Colts pushed forward. A saved goal line scramble and shots wide by Owen and Matty Sutch got the crowd excited before Matty Leek scored a super goal following some fancy footwork past the defence. Josh had a shot over the top following a corner before James had a great run up the right wing. A lovely cross to Matty Sutch saw goal number 3 safely scored. There were several attempts to score from the next corner but Owen finally put it over the bar. Joe carefully spotted James break up the wing who crossed in to Matthew but he couldn't quite get his head to it. Matthew had a good cross through the box and Matty had a good run to put past the keeper and the half finished 5-0.
The Colts started the 2nd half strongly and soon Matty Sutch had scored his second from a good pass from the keepter. The Colts continued to push forward with many corners and a shot from Joe and Johs. There then followed a contender for goal of the season from Fergus - a strong high kick from near the edge of the box went over the keeper's head and into the slotted in form Matthew goal! 7-0! More corners and unsuccessful shots from James and Owen tested the keeper.

Saughall Colts 0 v Princess Villa 1
(Match abandoned due to waterlogged pitch) GAME TO BE REPLAYED LATER IN THE SEASON!!
Following the nightmare events of the previous week were even fans of Freddy Kruger would have winced at the panic caused, it was important that the colts proved how good a side they could potentially be!!
What character these young lads showed today against this years joint league leaders. From our squad of 18, we lost players before kick off due to other commitments and another to illness. So, approaching the game with only 12 players was always going to be a challenge as we knew the energy levels required would be high. Players have been drafted in from our reserves. It was a bizarre game at Seahill played out against a backdrop of injuries, illness and players not available the field of play, and water water water! The pitch had surface water due to the heavy rain in the night small ponds which only surfaced during the game. Think Cambridge United away in the early nineties or Wimbledon away late eighties and it just about describes it!!
The colts gave a very good account and matched Villa well in the opening 10 minutes and carved a few opportunities. Defensively strong and disciplined we gave them no easy shots or passageway through and when they did James Joe and Jack and Jack were on hand to stop any attack. With Owen missing James filled in the centre back position. He took this position like a duck to water. With plenty of water to negotiate. He used his intelligence and did not put himself under any pressure. Calm defending he produced some impressive decisions and carried the ball out of defence to produce several attacks. Joe Warrington worked hard on the left and James and Joe backed each other up with some hard work and talking on the pitch.
Jake was magnificent in the nets. His shot-stopping was at his best. Despite all this Villa did manage to break the deadlock unfortunately for the colts as the goal was clearly offside. You could tell that we had the opposition rattled though as the staff and players started to bemoan the referee’s decisions.
Josh, sporting his Iberian look this season, latched onto a clever through ball and was unlucky not to level the scores. A moment of indecision in the away defence resulted in colts not taking full advantage to steer the ball home. Josh looked lively after a long break in the sun. With some link up play from Scotty saughall were unlucky not to level.
A tough game played in extremely difficult circumstances the pitch was barely playable on the colts left back position, increasing difficult to steer the ball or player to stand on their feet. Sensibly the young referee abandoned the game with 16 minutes on the clock.
You should be proud of the performance and the character you displayed... not one player ever questioning decisions, no one gave up and no one could say they hadn't given everything they had. Very proud of you lads, well done.
Mom James Winskill and our stand in keeper who never looked like conceding any goals.

Saughall Colts 0 v Buckley Pumas 5
Oh dear!! Where to begin?! Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong with few positives to take from a poor team performance.
We have thought for weeks that the soft centre of the team might be it's undoing but good individual performances masked this. Against a strong Buckley outfit, who won every ball they competed for and who used the pitch to their advantage the lack of competitiveness really showed. Buckley were stronger, faster and better in every department.
Individual mistakes cost us dear and going down to early goals did nothing to settle the team. Passes went astray, the ball was rarely brought under control and challenges were either not won or not contested.
Positives? We started to play better in the latter stages of the second half when Colts started to move the ball about but alas it was too late. Everybody's head had dropped.
Back to basics and some strong words???
I'm going for a lie down now and I may be some time

18 Oct 2009 (Cup game)
Newton Eagles 0 v Saughall Colts 6
Saughall Colts seem to be going from strength to strength this season. Another impressive performance on a dry October afternoon - what more could the parents ask for?
The Colts dominated this cup match from the start with a couple of shots saved and one from Owen which went over the bar. A well-taken free kick by James led to one of Matty Sutch goals. Great midfield play from Ben, Scott, Matty Leek and especially Sam Jackson kept the ball well in the Newton half. James then had a powerful run up the right wing which led to a corner. He took this expertly and Sam Jackson slotted it home. After 2 substitutions seeing Sam Gram and Ben Spenser on, the Colts were still pushing forward - a little too far at times as there were several off-side decisions! A rare break by Newton beat the back 4, who had been strong up to this point but Joe Warrington pulled off some great saves. Not deterred, the Colts pushed forward again and Matty Sutch scored a great goal from a lovely ball in from Ben Nicholson. Half-time 2-0
The second half gave debutant goalie Joseph Warrington a little more action but nothing his safe hands couldn't manage. Joe set the attack forwards but it was Owens fabulous ball from Scotts cross that extended the scoreline. Scott and James bagged their goals and a comfortable win was on the cards. Sam Jackson took a good run up the middle of the pitch but couldn't score. Scott Cobden was unlucky to have his goal chalked off for offside when is was clearly being played on side.
The whole team should be commended for their great team play, but special mention should go to Jack Williams our new Captain, Owen Harrop and new boy Ben for their strength at the back. Owen again gave the back for great confiedence, Matty Sutch the Man of the Match for being everywhere he needed to be and his goals were important to keep the pressure on.

Saughall Colts 5 v Newton Eagles 1
Back to winning ways after last weeks disappointment, and how good it feels. Although not a ' classic performance ' as we continued to treat the ball like a hot potato, there were periods when the boys did get the ball on the ground and pass like we know they can.
Owen Harrop was a good example of this, he kept things simple, moved the ball quickly when required and did what he does best....read the game and find space when he needs to, and was worthy of his MOM award. Marcus Kennedy and Matty Sutch both continued to impress as the match progressed Jack Kennedy was again very comfortable in goal and pulled of a world class save after the Newton’s striker was in on goal, and although the score card shows 1 goal conceded the defensive boys were only rarely troubled. Joe Warrington again showed how hard he works with Owen who just edged James Winskill Hat rick hero the mom award. An early goal from Scott Cobden settled the boys down a great strike that ballooned to roof of the net. Jack (Carra) Williams continued to impress he never gave the strikers a minute on the ball. The 3 Sams all had cameo roles but did what was asked of them. A special mention to Mathew Prescott who had a shot saved by the keeper which was followed in by Jamie Downs.
All in all a better day at the office. Well done all

Chester Nomads Colts 7 v Saughall Colts 0
A top of the table clash which was
played in late Autumn sunshine. Saughall had beaten in a friendly match late
last season but coach Ric Cobden warned the team against complacency. The
Nomads were joined on points with us and the crowd were expecting a close
match.
Early pressure from Saughall was soaked up by the increasingly competent
defensive line which has been fairly settled for a few matches now. Saughalls
midfield which for times last week appeared to have taken an early holiday were
all present and correct this time, and little by little Saughall started to work
their way into the match.
Joe Warrington saw a shot rebound off the bar, but he would have to wait long
time to come close again. His defensive qualities was for all to see and was
unlucky when Nomads went on one a run which ended in a shot and the striker
was on hand to put in the rebound.1-0. It was a great effort from Jack Kennedy
but he could not keep the ball out of the nett.
The Nomads were in the ascendency now midfield was banging in shots for fun, but to some excellent saves from Kennedy. A half time lead of just one goal.
Saughall came out of the traps quickly but Nomads keeper kept them in it . James had a shot cleared off the line after a rare goalkeeping slip. They then caught us on the break
It was a very close game but once they scored a 18 yard screamer which brought rapturous applause from the home crowd. It was clear that Saughall heads went down. And they stopping doing what they were doing in the first half.
A gritty performance from the back four
and keeper who never gave up. Perhaps the midfield can learn a lesion.
Next week we play Newton hopefully with the midfield that played in the first
half. And perhaps we can and the supporters dream of a possible cup run.

Saughall Colts 7 v Waverton Wasps 3
On a beautiful warm Sunday afternoon, Saughall Colts kicked off their 4th game of the season with a squad of 14 players. And with some fantastic football being played by both sides. Saughall went a goal down early on.
Saughall had their own chances with some good interchange of play between James Winskill Josh Gregory and Scott Cobden. Ben Nicholson produced some great passes onto the wing to allow the wingers to put some good crosses in. The score at half time was 2-2.
After the break Saughall were unlucky after hitting the woodwork three times. Saughall eventually scored a third goal within two minutes of the restart which turned the game on its head. Joe Warrington battled hard and stopped the opposition from scoring again. Saughall passed the ball with ease and after some excellent work produced more goals. A consolidation goal was scored late on for Waverton Wasps. Both teams should be congratulated for the football that was played as it was a pleasure to watch.

Vicars Cross 3 V Saughall Colts 9
Saughall entertained Vicars cross today away from home. Last season it was a close game and we did not want to repeat the score line. Vicars Cross came out strong and Saughall found themselves 2 nil down after 10 minutes Ben Nicholson who had a fantastic game put Saughall back into contention .Only for Saughall to be hit on the break. . Jamie Downs went close with a shot just clearing the bar. Josh Gregory latched on to a great ball from Matty Sutch to make it 3 – 2 for the home side at half time. Owen Harrop our captain put a great shift in at centre back and was unlucky not to score with a couple of long range efforts.
Second half after instruction we knew that they would tire and we could counter this, we kept producing attack after attack and Ben Nicholson scored Saughalls third. Mike Richards produced some good saves to keep Vicars Cross from scoring.
James Winskill was frustrated at being on the bench and came on and got his reward with 2 goals. Scotty Cobden had another great game and scored his hatrick after 50 minutes. Sam Graham put two great forward passes for both Josh and Sam Jackson to lash home. A special mention to Matty Prescott who had to come off injured and gave yet again a good account of himself.

Both teams battled hard with plenty of good tackling and ball play. First half saw Saughall take the lead through a corner put in from Fergus Redeal for Dan Jones to head home, only for Westminster Park to equalise soon after to quickly get back into the game. A second goal from Matthew Leek again from a header from a corner gave Saughall the lead.
